If there is a testament of animation in TV animation to complement Redline in movie animation, then look no further. Produced by studio Bones with special mention to the main players, director Yuzuru Tachikawa and character designer Yoshimichi Kameda bring us an adaptation of ONE’s manga Mob Psycho 100.

In a world of psychics, Shigeo “Mob” Kageyama hangs out with a con artist providing psychic services called Reigen. However, Mob himself is a psychic, a particular one whose powers become stronger immensely as his emotional levels rise. Unfortunately, Mob is a teenager in the middle of the spring of youth so will he be able to cope with his powers and get close to his childhood crush Tsubomi or will he explode?

If there is something undeniable, it is that the Mob Psycho 100 anime uses the full potential as a visual audio medium. A full range of colour used at an apt situation, applications of animation techniques and styles used daringly (even going as far as oil painting-like sequences by Miyuki Sato, one person of this largely female staff), all in challenging layouts and camera movement which is to say, there is not a dull moment to be had. Comedy is well delivered, characters become lovable idiots and action is impactful. All elements considered including masterful Kenji Kawai, Mob delivers what it sets out to do and more.

There is without a doubt that this series will carry such quality of work for the rest of its run and with that reassurance, Mob Psycho 100 is a must watch of this season and beyond it because it will be a while before anything can come and top this (I mean oil painting animation, can you believe that?)
